At Your Farmer, we believe the healthier food comes from working with nature, not against it. Our farmers design their growing systems to prevent pest and disease problems before they start - it's all about creating healthy, balanced farm ecosystems.

Think of it like this: just as a healthy immune system helps you fight off illness naturally, a healthy farm system has its own natural defenses. Our farmers focus on creating these robust natural systems through what we call "ecological design."

We wanted to share a video inderview with Andre Leu, a leading voice in ecological farming, explaining why this approach matters so much and why its critical to our nutrition vs just consimung "empty" calories.

As Andre says small family farms, like Your Farmer's, are producing real food in biologically diverse systems that actually norish people.

The Secret to Healther Food is in the Soil

It all starts underground with thriving soil biology. Our farmers nurture diverse communities of beneficial soil organisms - from fungi and bacteria to earthworms. This living soil helps:

  • Break down organic matter into plant nutrients

  • Build soil structure for excellent water holding capacity (resilience against drought) and strong root growth (more access to nutrients)

  • Support natural disease suppression

  • Create healthier, more resilient plants

Nature's Pest Control Squad

Above ground, our farmers create habitat for beneficial insects like ladybugs, parasitic wasps and predatory beetles - nature's very own pest control team! By maintaining areas of native vegetation, wetlands and flowering plants, these helpful creatures stick around to keep pest populations in check naturally.

Smart Growing Strategies for Healther Food

Our farmers use a clever mix of ecological nature-based techniques that work together like a well-rehearsed dance. On our grazing lands, you'll find:

Planned Grazing

Just as wild herds naturally moved across landscapes, our farmers use planned grazing to:

  • Mimic natural grazing patterns

  • Give pastures plenty of recovery time

  • Build deeper, healthier root systems

  • Increase soil organic matter

  • Improve water retention in soil

Our grazing methods maximise rest periods, some grazing systems will only see animals on a given pastures for 20-30 days a year!

Plant Diversity

Our pastures aren't just grass - they're diverse salad bars for livestock that include:

  • Deep-rooted perennial grasses

  • Nitrogen-fixing legumes

  • Herbs and forbs rich in minerals

  • Native species that support local ecologies

Ourside grazing pastures, we also use:

  • Companion planting to naturally deter unwanted insects

  • Crop rotation to break pest and disease cycles

  • Mixed plantings rather than monocultures

  • Strategic habitat creation for beneficial organisms

  • Techniques that build soil biology to support plant health

Prevention Over Cure

While conventional farming often relies on routine pesticide spraying as a standard practice, our ecological approach means synthetic pesticides are rarely needed. When challenges do arise, our farmers have a toolkit of biological options to draw on first.

The result?

Food grown in harmony with nature, supporting the health of our soils, farms and families. Now that's food you can feel good about!
